Seven % Solution
THE STORY: In 2012, the owners of Bergamot Alley, a bar and wine retail shop in Healdsburg, California, and a small group of winemakers got together to talk about farming. They noticed that roughly 93% of Northern California Vineyard acreage was planted to only eight grape varieties- cabernet, chardonnay, pinot noir, syrah, merlot, sauvignon blanc, zinfandel and petite sirah. The remaining seven percent of land is home to hundreds of lesser known varieties. Noting the dominance of the Big Eight, this small posse of friends set out to help highlight that seven percent of acreage, the varieties that are grown there, the people who make wine from these varieties, and all the supporting efforts from winemakers, farmers, shops, and restaurants made to shift these acreage percentages. The Seven % Solution is all about celebrating and perpetuating varietal diversity in California. Let's give some unique grapes a little attention.

In Pursuit of Balance
THE STORY: In Pursuit of Balance was a non-profit organization founded in 2011 to promote dialogue around the meaning of balance in California wines. It started as a small event to draw attention to producers who weren't chasing after ratings from wine critics, and celebrates well-balanced, food-friendly wines from small, quality California wine producers. IPOB was created by Rajat Parr of Domaine de la Côte and Sandhi, and Jasmine Hirsch of Hirsch Vineyards, to celebrate wineries striving to produce balanced pinot noir and chardonnay. We've taken our flight beyond pinot noir and chardonnay, showcasing other well balanced, food-friendly California varietals from small, high quality producers.
